Armed Israeli settlers attacked journalists and activists near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, including journalists Adele Shoko and Andrei Krasnovsky, who hold Russian and Israeli citizenships, and American journalist and activist Jasper Nathaniel.
Beatings and threats to open fire
Shoko said the settlers beat her, threatened to shoot her and took her glasses. They stole Krasnovsky’s phone and sprayed pepper spray in Nathaniel’s face. Video footage shows armed men ordering the journalists to lie face down on the ground.
She said Krasnovsky suffered a concussion and lost consciousness several times while being held. The settlers prevented an ambulance from evacuating him, leaving him alone inside it for a long period before the ambulance took him to a police station instead of a hospital.
Seven attacks on farmers in 12 hours
The Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission said seven attacks by the Israeli army and settlers in 12 hours targeted Palestinian farmers, their land and their supporters during the olive harvest. The attacks included uprooting more than 50 olive and almond trees, demolishing structures and walls, and damaging water wells in Bethlehem. The army also arrested four Palestinians while they were harvesting olives in Nablus.
Hebron under pressure
Israel launched a large-scale operation in Hebron after an attack on a military checkpoint on October 23 in which two Israeli soldiers were killed. The Committee to Protect Journalists said Israeli forces arrested two journalists in the city on October 26 and raided the office of Al-Ghad channel.
About 750,000 Israelis live in 365 settlements and settlement outposts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are illegal under international law.
