Floods caused by heavy rain hit six Syrian provinces—Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Hama, Homs and Latakia—the Syrian Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management said, announcing that the number of reports and distress calls had exceeded 350.
Video footage showed a military helicopter rescuing a civilian stranded by floodwaters in a desert area inundated by the floods. The scene featured a helicopter model previously used by Bashar al-Assad’s regime to bomb civilian areas.
Fifteen civilians rescued and 375 families evacuated
Civil defense teams carried out 165 field responses by Wednesday evening and rescued 15 civilians whose vehicles had been surrounded by floodwaters. About 375 families left their damaged camps in rural Raqqa. Water pumping and drainage operations covered more than 150 homes and public facilities, including two hospitals, schools and bakeries.
One death was recorded in western rural Raqqa, while teams, joined by the Syrian army, continued searching for a missing person near al-Salmani Bridge west of the city of Tabqa.
Seven bridges and roads rendered unusable
The floods rendered seven bridges, culverts and dirt roads unusable, including three bridges in Deir ez-Zor and its countryside, as well as causing damage to the Kantarī and al-Salmani bridges in rural Raqqa.
The emergency minister called on residents of the eastern provinces to remain in their homes and avoid flood channels. The ministry also raised its readiness along the Syrian coast in anticipation of expected heavy rainfall.
