In a message issued to mark United Nations Day and the 81st anniversary of the organization’s founding, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for changes to the structure of the Security Council to create a more effective UN capable of resolving global crises.
Erdoğan said a more just and inclusive Security Council that responds to the expectations of the international community would strengthen the UN’s capacity to address global crises.
He highlighted developments in Gaza
Addressing Gaza as well, Erdoğan said that, alongside the process in which more than 74,000 people have lost their lives and which he described as “genocide,” conflicts in different parts of the world demonstrate the urgency of UN reform.
Erdoğan said that ongoing wars and humanitarian disasters, as well as climate change, hunger, poverty, racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia, have increased the responsibilities of the international organization.
Call to uphold the UN Charter
Recalling that the UN was established after two world wars to protect future generations from the devastation of war, Erdoğan said the organization has important responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and supporting development and prosperity.

Erdoğan called on countries to adhere more strongly to the UN Charter and support reforms that would enhance the effectiveness of the organization’s principal organs.
Goal of making Istanbul a UN hub
Reiterating Türkiye’s support for the UN80 Initiative launched by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Erdoğan said Türkiye continues close cooperation with the organization toward the goal of making Istanbul a UN hub.
Congratulating UN personnel in different parts of the world in his message, Erdoğan said Türkiye would continue to support efforts to establish a more effective and inclusive international system.
