Former MI6 chief John Sawers said the Houthis are "here to stay" in Yemen and "will not be defeated," adding that they will control a large part of the country in the future.

Sawers, who headed Britain's Secret Intelligence Service from 2009 to 2014, made the remarks on Monday at the Global Security Forum in the Qatari capital, Doha.
Limited Saudi options
He linked his assessment to the failure of Riyadh's efforts over the past decade to back an alternative authority in Yemen, which he said had left Saudi Arabia with few options. Pointing to indirect talks in which Oman plays a helping role, Sawers said he believed a settlement was possible.
His remarks come as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia escalate, amid reports that Britain is sending Typhoon fighter jets to help protect the kingdom.
