In an investigation by Baghdad’s Central Criminal Court for Combating Corruption, action was taken against money and assets belonging to Ala Muhsin Khalaf, the office director of former Petroleum Ministry official Adnan al-Jumaili.
The investigating judge announced that 7 billion Iraqi dinars and $5.5 million had been seized as part of the proceedings. The seized Iraqi dinars were estimated to be worth approximately $5.3 million.
Properties and vehicles seized
Thirty-five properties and six cars belonging to Khalaf were also listed among the assets seized as part of the investigation. Khalaf was identified as the office director of Adnan al-Jumaili, a former Petroleum Ministry official responsible for liquidation operations.
The assets were registered as part of the investigative proceedings against Khalaf. Jumaili remains in custody on suspicion of wasting public resources and awarding contracts in violation of the law.
“Dawn Offensive” launched on June 28
The Iraqi government launched a campaign called the “Dawn Offensive” on June 28 to combat financial and administrative corruption, in coordination with the Supreme Judicial Council.
The campaign aims to track people allegedly involved in corruption and recover public resources. As part of the campaign, proceedings were initiated against current and former officials, lawmakers, businesspeople and some individuals from the oil sector.
The investigation was also linked to statements Jumaili gave after he was dismissed on June 2. Money, properties and other assets were seized during raids conducted in Baghdad and several provinces.
