Church leaders in Jerusalem said attacks against Palestinians and foreigners who came to show solidarity with the region were continuing in the occupied West Bank because of impunity.
The Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem condemned the incident that occurred on Saturday during the olive harvest in the village of Taybeh, northeast of Ramallah. The attack in the predominantly Christian village targeted Palestinian farmers as well as European diplomats and officials visiting the area to show solidarity with local communities.
Call for justice for those responsible
The church leaders said the incident in Taybeh was not isolated and that violence against Palestinian villages across the West Bank had increased in recent weeks, particularly during the olive harvest.
The statement said the attacks were continuing because those responsible had escaped punishment and called on Israeli authorities to bring them to justice. It also urged the international community to intensify efforts to protect Palestinians and foreign visitors supporting them in Taybeh and throughout the West Bank.

Ruling allowing the taking of olives
The leaders also condemned a religious ruling by Israeli Rabbi Dov Lior allowing Jews to take olives belonging to Palestinian farmers. The ruling, published last week, deemed taking the olives permissible and even virtuous. The church leaders described this approach as dangerous and unacceptable.
They welcomed the reactions of other rabbis and Jewish groups who opposed Dov Lior’s ruling.
The Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission announced that the number of attacks it said had been carried out by Israeli settlers across the West Bank over the past three years had exceeded 14,742.
