Security support agreement signed in Beirut
Lebanon and the UK signed an agreement in Beirut on Thursday under a British program aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s military and security institutions.
Lebanese Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmed Haccar, Defense Minister Michel Menassa and the UK’s ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, signed the agreement at a ceremony held at the Interior Ministry building.
Haccar, Menassa and Cowell said the agreement demonstrated the depth of the partnership between Lebanon and the UK and the importance attached to continuing security cooperation.
Counterterrorism and institutional capacity
The UK program aims to strengthen security in Lebanon and reduce the causes of instability. It plans to support security institutions’ capacity to address internal and external threats.
The program covers the ministries of Interior and Defense, as well as their affiliated units. Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces and the Lebanese Army are among the main institutions set to receive support.
The agreement includes counterterrorism efforts, preventing crime-related violence, renovating and equipping facilities and infrastructure, developing digital capacity, and providing the necessary training programs.
