Russia’s capital Moscow came under a large-scale drone attack on September 20, with the Moscow oil refinery in the Kapotnya district southeast of the capital among the sites targeted.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that some of the drones managed to reach the refinery area, causing damage to the facility.

The full extent of the damage to the refinery was not immediately clear, and no announcement was made that its operations had been completely halted.
One of Moscow’s key oil refineries
The Moscow oil refinery is an important facility in the oil-refining sector and plays a key role in supplying fuel to the Russian capital and surrounding areas.

According to data reported by Reuters, the refinery processed about 11.6 million tons of crude oil in 2024 and produced about 2.9 million tons of gasoline and 3.2 million tons of diesel fuel during the same period.
Large-scale drone attack on Moscow

The refinery was targeted as part of a broad wave of drone attacks on Moscow and the surrounding region.
Russian authorities said air defenses had intercepted more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, including about 450 that were heading toward Moscow.

The attacks in the Moscow region also killed two people and damaged residential buildings and vehicles.
In recent years, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted oil refineries and energy facilities inside Russian territory.
