Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Tuesday on the sidelines of the eighth summit of heads of state and government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Moscow, hours after meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in the Russian capital.
During the meeting, the Qatari emir said the region was facing difficult circumstances due to tensions between the United States and Iran, adding: "We are counting on Russia to help resolve the Strait of Hormuz crisis." He stressed that "the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza is still continuing" and that Russian-Qatari relations had developed significantly over the past decade.
Putin praises Qatar’s mediation
Putin, for his part, welcomed the Qatari emir, saying: "We are very pleased to see you in Moscow, this time at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum," stressing that the stability of global energy markets largely depends on cooperation and coordination between the two countries. He said trade volume had increased by 10%, noting the Qatar Investment Authority’s investments in major Russian companies and its partnership with the Russian Direct Investment Fund.
Putin praised Qatar’s mediation role in resolving disputes in the Gulf region, particularly those involving Iran, stressing that the Islamabad memorandum signed in June through Qatari and Pakistani mediation remained the basis for continuing negotiations and that Moscow was ready to assist in reaching a settlement.
Meeting with Pezeshkian ahead of summit
The Qatari emir had met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at his residence in Moscow before the summit began. According to the Amiri Diwan, the two sides discussed regional developments, the course of negotiations, the latest developments regarding the Strait of Hormuz and energy supplies, as well as issues on the summit’s agenda.
After the summit, the Qatari emir said it had provided an opportunity to enhance coordination and exchange views on the challenges facing global gas markets, stressing that Qatar would continue contributing to global energy security. Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov had received Sheikh Tamim upon his arrival in Moscow.
