The Damascus administration called for Israeli forces to withdraw to the positions they held before December 8, 2024, and for the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement to be reinstated and fully implemented. The demands were raised during Syrian-Israeli talks held in Jordan under U.S. mediation.
A delegation led by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani met with an Israeli delegation to reduce tensions in Syrian territory and contribute to regional stability. Officials from Syria’s General Intelligence Directorate and Military Intelligence Directorate also attended the meeting.
Call for a mechanism to end attacks
The parties discussed ways to prevent the escalation that followed Israel’s recent airstrikes. They considered establishing workable mechanisms to end Israeli attacks, detention operations and strikes against targets.
The mechanisms are intended to lay the groundwork for a broader agreement in the future through a negotiating process that will be relaunched.
Syria emphasizes sovereignty and the Golan Heights
The Syrian delegation stated that the country is a sovereign state and has the right to rebuild and develop its army in line with its national interests. The Damascus administration said it would not accept any agreement or mechanism that restricted its sovereign rights.
The meeting also reiterated the position that the occupied Golan Heights are Syrian territory. It was stated that addressing the final status of the Golan Heights at this stage would be premature.
