A new floating military bridge was built through a joint effort by the Turkish and Syrian armed forces to restore transport between the two banks of the Euphrates River in Mayadin, east of Deir ez-Zor.
Türkiye’s Ambassador to Damascus, Nuh Yılmaz, said construction was completed on August 30. Referring to the date celebrated as Victory Day in Türkiye, Yılmaz said the Turkish and Syrian armed forces were building a common future not only during times of war but also in peacetime.
Replaced a structure destroyed by flooding
The new bridge was built to replace the old bridge, which became unusable after flooding. The project thus became the second bridge construction effort jointly carried out by the Turkish and Syrian armed forces.
Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra announced that the bridge’s installation had been completed in cooperation with the Turkish army. Engineering units affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Defense and the Turkish Ministry of Defense carried out the bridge’s assembly jointly.
Transport and commercial shipping to become easier
The bridge is intended to restore crossings between the two banks of the Euphrates, facilitate transportation for local residents, and enable products and commercial goods to be transported between the eastern and western sides of the river.
Gazi Shabib, the Syrian Defense Ministry official responsible for bridges, said the structure was a temporary emergency solution that would remain in use until infrastructure damage was repaired and permanent solutions were found.
Bridge sent to Mayadin on August 26
The Syrian Ministry of Defense transported the bridge to Mayadin on August 26 in preparation for its assembly. The effort was intended to reduce the transportation burden between the two banks of the river.
Another floating bridge built by Türkiye over the Euphrates was opened on July 12. The Turkish Ministry of Defense said that more than 237,000 vehicles had crossed the bridge within one month as of August 15.
