Azerbaijan announced that it welcomed the United Arab Emirates’ nomination of State Minister Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for UN secretary-general, succeeding Antonio Guterres.
Responding to a media question about the nomination, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ayخان Haji-Zadeh said Baku welcomed the initiative.
Haji-Zadeh said Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to selecting the next secretary-general in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter. He expressed hope that the process would lead to a stronger and more effective United Nations in addressing current challenges.

The Gulf Cooperation Council states had unanimously announced their support for Nusseibeh’s nomination after the UAE announced it last week. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Palestine also announced their support.
Nusseibeh served as the UAE’s permanent representative to the United Nations from 2013 to 2024. She also served as Vice-President of the General Assembly and President of the Executive Board of UN Women. If elected, she would become the first woman to lead the international organization.
The second term of current Secretary-General Guterres ends on December 31, while Türkiye is also preparing to nominate its former foreign minister, Feridun Sinirlioğlu, for the post.
