Voters in Israel have begun casting ballots in the general election to choose the 120 members of the Knesset. There are 7.3 million eligible voters, including 1.2 million of Palestinian origin.
More than 30 parties and lists are competing to surpass the 3.25 percent electoral threshold required to enter the Knesset, while the latest opinion polls indicate that 11 to 12 parties will clear the threshold.

The election is expected to feature a close contest between current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, while polls show that no party will be able to reach the 61 seats needed to form a government.
The election comes after four years of a Netanyahu government that carried out attacks in the region, and is the first general election held on schedule since 1988. The Israeli army imposed a comprehensive closure on the West Bank on election day.
