Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez cited Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory during an election rally for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party in Gijón, northern Spain, ahead of the general election scheduled for November 29.
Addressing his supporters, Sánchez said: “Be proud that you are Europe’s beloved village and a beacon of hope amid all this darkness in the world,” adding: “If Brazil can, Spain can too.”
A reference to the Asterix stories
The phrase “beloved village” refers to the small village in the Asterix comic books that stood alone against the Roman Empire, comparing Spain to a country resisting the rise of the right in Europe.
Sánchez described the election as a choice between progress and the past, solidarity and injustice, and love and hatred. He pledged to amend the Constitution in the next term to guarantee pension payments and link their increases to inflation, while affirming his aim of winning 176 seats, the number needed for an absolute majority.
An attack on the right
Sánchez criticized the conservative People’s Party, saying that “voting for Feijóo is the same as voting for Vox,” the far-right party. He pointed to the support given by leaders such as Argentina’s Javier Milei, U.S. President Donald Trump and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni to Vox leader Santiago Abascal.
Brazilian President Lula thanked Sánchez for his support, describing the two countries as “allies in global progressivism.” Lula won a fourth term in the second round on October 25, defeating his rival Flávio Bolsonaro by more than 4 million votes.
