Security coordination between Jordan and Syria will be conducted through a joint committee following the latest air operations in Daraa province.
The decision was announced in a joint statement issued on Tuesday evening after a phone call between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The committee will monitor the details and consequences of the operations, as well as developments in the region.
Daraa casualties to be examined
According to the joint statement, the two ministers assessed the air operations carried out by the Jordanian Armed Forces against Daesh targets in Daraa province the previous day.
Safadi said the operations were based on information from the field and aimed to prevent confirmed threats to Jordan’s security, as well as terrorist attacks planned to take place soon.
The Jordanian foreign minister expressed sorrow over the deaths of civilians in the operations, offering condolences to the Syrian people and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Safadi said they attached as much importance to the safety of Syrian civilians as to the safety of Jordanian citizens.
Daraa’s Health Directorate said seven bodies and three injured people were brought to hospitals in the province after Jordan’s airstrikes.
Sustainable coordination between the two countries
Safadi said Jordan fully respected Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, stability and the safety of its citizens. Safadi said the security and fate of the two countries were interconnected, adding that they viewed Syria’s security as part of Jordan’s security.

Asaad al-Shaibani and Ayman Safadi agreed that coordination should be developed through institutional and sustainable channels to combat terrorism and prevent the smuggling of drugs and weapons across the border.
The joint security committee is expected to examine all the details and facts surrounding the latest operations, monitor the consequences of developments, and strengthen field and intelligence coordination against terrorist threats.
Committee decision follows Kerak attack
The Jordanian Armed Forces said on Monday that they had conducted air operations against several targets in southern Syria. The operations, dubbed Jordanian Deterrence-Hamoud, were carried out after an attack on a church in Jordan’s Kerak province.
The Jordanian army said those who carried out the attack were linked to the structures that were struck and that some members of these groups were killed or wounded in the operations. The army also said that some positions and vehicles were destroyed, but did not disclose the names of the targeted groups or the total number of casualties.
A few hours before the operations, Jordan’s Public Security Directorate announced that three suspects in the Kerak attack had been arrested following an armed clash. Nine people were killed in the attack on Friday, which targeted people attending a funeral ceremony outside a church in the village of Hamoud in Kerak province.
