United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the deaths of civilians in airstrikes by the Jordanian army targeting sites in southern Syria.
Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Daniela Gross de Almeida conveyed Guterres’s condemnation at the daily press briefing on Tuesday. Almeida said the UN was closely monitoring statements by Jordanian and Syrian authorities regarding the strikes.
The UN secretary-general called on all parties to take the necessary measures to protect civilians in accordance with international law.
“We continue to emphasize the importance of respecting the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of all member states in accordance with the United Nations Charter,” Almeida said.
Syria and Jordan coordinate on a joint security committee
The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that coordination was underway with Jordan to establish an urgent joint security and field committee following Jordanian airstrikes on Daraa province in southern Syria.

The ministry rejected the strikes but said it attached importance to preserving bilateral relations with Jordan. The joint committee is intended to end violations and acts of extremism in the field, prevent similar incidents from recurring, protect the shared border and ensure full security and field coordination between the two countries.
Jordan said the strikes were retaliation for a church attack
The Jordanian army announced on Monday that it had carried out airstrikes against targets in southern Syria that it said belonged to terrorist organizations. Jordan said the operations were conducted in response to an attack targeting a church in Hamud village in the country’s southern Karak province on Friday.
The Jordanian government said on Tuesday that more than 20 members of ISIS had been killed and a large weapons depot destroyed in strikes against targets in Syria that it said belonged to the organization.
Jordanian authorities also announced on Monday that three people suspected of involvement in the church attack had been arrested in Karak province following an armed clash with security forces.
