German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Muslim migrants who do not accept Germany’s historical responsibility for the Holocaust should not remain in the country. He made the remarks during a reception in Berlin for Jewish athletes.
Merz said: “Our country’s historical responsibility applies equally to those arriving in Germany from Muslim-majority countries. Anyone who does not accept it must leave our country.”

Merz recalled a speech delivered by former German President Richard von Weizsäcker before the Bundestag in 1985, stressing that this approach applies to German society as a whole. He added: “I see these words as an enduring principle, and I would like to add, given today’s circumstances, that this responsibility also applies to migrants arriving in Germany.”
Germany is home to one of Europe’s largest Muslim communities, including around 3 million people of Turkish origin, as well as large numbers of migrants and refugees from Syria, Iraq and other Arab countries.
