The Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency branch in Al Bayda, eastern Libya, transferred 48 irregular migrants of various nationalities to the Qanfouda Shelter and Deportation Center to complete the legal and administrative procedures required for their return to their countries, local Libyan media reported.
The migrants comprised three nationalities: 22 from Chad, 18 from Sudan and 8 from Niger. Local Libyan media said the group included migrants with viral hepatitis, as well as people who had received deportation orders from the public prosecution.
“National and public health security”
The agency said the measures were part of its efforts to strengthen national and public health security, monitor the situation of irregular migrants within the branch’s jurisdiction and take legal action against those without entry visas or legal residency permits, or those found to have infectious diseases, in accordance with applicable regulations.
The Qanfouda Center is located in Benghazi and is used to house irregular migrants before their deportation. Libya is one of the main transit countries for migrants from sub-Saharan African countries, particularly Chad, Sudan and Niger, who are heading toward Europe or seeking work there.
