Speaking after Israel’s parliamentary elections, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich rejected opposition leaders’ assessment that the bloc supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been defeated.
Addressing his supporters at the election headquarters of the far-right Religious Zionism party in Jerusalem, Smotrich argued that the opposition would not achieve its goals. “We will not allow you to celebrate. They are rejoicing because they think they can stop our settler revolution in Judea and Samaria,” Smotrich said.
The Israeli finance minister also said that Jewish settlements would be established in Gaza.
Opposition bloc leads in exit polls
An exit poll broadcast by Israel’s public broadcaster projected that the opposition bloc led by former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot would win 52 seats. The far-right coalition led by Netanyahu was projected to win 50 seats.

However, 61 seats are needed to form a government in the 120-seat Knesset, and the opposition bloc is not reaching that number despite appearing ahead in the election results.
Palestinian lists projected to win 18 seats
In the general election held in the country after four years, the two lists representing Palestinian citizens of Israel are projected to win a combined 18 seats. Eleven of those seats are expected to go to the United Arab List.
The final election results are expected to be announced no later than November 4, after the checks and the review of objections have been completed.
