The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a drone near Mecca and that it had been sent by Yemen’s Houthis. The Houthis denied any connection to the incident.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said the drone had been intercepted and destroyed in Mecca’s airspace.
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had not carried out any operation targeting Saudi Arabia on Friday. Saree described the statement that a drone had been intercepted in Mecca’s airspace as an outright lie.
Opposing military statements around Saudi Arabia
The coalition’s statement came after it announced that air defense systems had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile said to have targeted western Saudi Arabia on the same day.

The Houthis had also announced on Thursday that they had carried out six attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia. The targets listed by the group included oil facilities and airports.
Coalition intervention in Yemen conflict
The Saudi-led coalition has been involved in the conflict in Yemen since March 2015. The coalition supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government against the Houthis, who seized the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014.
