A fire that broke out aboard a ship leaving the Strait of Hormuz was extinguished. The crew was safe, and the incident caused no environmental damage.
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the incident occurred late Thursday about 25 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Khasab. The cause of the fire was initially unknown, and the ship caught fire while moving out of the strait.
Explosions reportedly caused engine-room fire
In a confirmed report issued later, UKMTO said the crew was safe and no environmental damage had occurred.
The report said a small boat approaching from the tanker’s port side attached two explosive devices to the hull above the waterline. The resulting explosions caused a fire in the engine room and temporarily disabled the ship.

Ship continued to its next port
After the fire was extinguished, the ship continued sailing toward its next port of call. UKMTO urged vessels operating around the Strait of Hormuz to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
The incident occurred as tensions over navigation between Iran and the United States were rising in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy and commodity shipments.
In February, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, while Tehran responded with attacks on Israeli and U.S. targets in the region. After a ceasefire agreement was reached in April, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June on freedom of navigation in the strait, but implementation did not advance because of security disputes over the strategic waterway.
