The Great Umayyad Mosque in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo reopened for worship on Thursday evening after 13 years out of service, at a ceremony attended by Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib. The call to prayer was heard from the mosque for the first time since 2013.

The mosque suffered heavy damage during the war, with large parts of its dome and arcades destroyed and its famed minaret, a landmark of old Aleppo, collapsing in April 2013.

Restoration covered the arcades, courtyard, fountain and ablution area, while the minaret was rebuilt using original stones that were salvaged, sorted and documented. Built between 715 and 717 under the Umayyads, the mosque stands at the heart of Aleppo’s old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
