Syrian Foreign Minister Shaibani assessed his country’s regional agenda at the Arab League’s 166th Ministerial Session in Cairo. He said Arab countries had gathered under the Arab League at a time requiring solidarity and a common vision.
Shaibani said bringing weapons under unified control in Syria and making decisions on deterrence were the state’s absolute sovereign rights. He said the Syrian government’s aim was to protect Syrians within a single homeland.
Talks on Israel’s withdrawal
Shaibani announced that US-mediated talks were being held to end Israel’s attacks and secure its withdrawal to the lines in place before December 8, 2024. He said the process was important for Syria’s regional security.
Shaibani said Syria was focusing on reconstruction and noted that they rejected being drawn into a new conflict that would derail efforts to rebuild the country.
Syria’s reconstruction goal
Shaibani argued that the Syrian people had moved the country from crisis management to national reconstruction within 20 months. He said the period of bloody tyranny that had consumed Syrians’ lives for decades was over.
Shaibani said the people had elected modern Syria’s first People’s Assembly through their free will. He said national security and defense institutions had been restructured to protect the borders.
Thanks to the Arab League over the Golan Heights
Shaibani thanked the Arab League for condemning Colombia’s decision to recognize Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights.
Shaibani said Syria had reaffirmed that Arab rights in the occupied Golan were inalienable and that they remained committed to a diplomatic solution. He also said they were working to end Israel’s aggression, arrests and violations.
